Create the Perfect Picnic in 6 Easy Steps: Tips & Tricks

There is nothing better than a cheeky meal outdoors surrounded by scenic views and grass in the toes Whether it is a sunny afternoon in the park, a peaceful spot by the lake or a cozy corner in your backyard a well-planned picnic can turn any ordinary day into a cinematic masterpiece. Here are six tips on how to elevate your picnic experience, to guarantee its one you never forget.

1. Choose an ideal location

The first step to a successful picnic is picking the perfect spot for you. Consider a location with a scenic view, shade, and enough space to spread out comfortably. If you live in Sydney, check out our blog post about the best undiscovered picnic spots in Sydney. Parks, beaches, and gardens are classic choices but don’t overlook the hidden gems like local vineyards, scenic hiking trails or even the comfort of your own backyard. If privacy is a priority try and think outside the box away from the crowds.

2. Le Menu

The key to a memorable picnic is a well thought out menu that balances convenience with flavour. Here are a few ideas:

  • Finger food: think sandwiches, premade wraps, or sliders.
  • Charcuterie boards with cheeses, cold cuts, crackers, and fresh fruit (this is our personal fav we never overlook a cheese board- its the French in us)
  • Salads: easy in a mason jar or container to avoid the mess or assembling
  • Sweet treats: (non-negotiable at the end of a picnic) think brownies, croissants, a packet of tim-tams or some fresh fruit.
  • Drinks: it's almost impossible to have a picnic without the perfect wine pairing. Cannot go past one of Chateau Marmalades classics, so easy to open and drink bringing back the fun in wine!

3. Packing the essentials

Ok so we have got the food sorted but here are the essentials we tend to forget until we get there…

  • A blanket – we have all been there for those spontaneous picnics where we end up sitting on our jumpers... We suggest a pop of gingham!
  • Cooler/ picnic basket
  • Tableware: reusable plates, utensils, cups, napkins and cutting boards
  • Rubbish bins: do not be that guy that does not pack up after themselves. Tres embarrassing...

4. Activities

Whatever the vibe of this picnic, come prepared. We need games, a good book, some pillows, a frisbee, cards, maybe even a bit of Finska, you never know where this picnic could take you so think of anything. We love a mindful moment to colour and journaling, while indulging on a little Pinot Noir!

5. Embrace the Season

Tailor your picnic to the season. For spring let’s focus on light, fresh flavours, and florals. This summer, keep it cool with chilled foods and refreshing wine, we suggest our Pinot Grigio (potentially close to the water for a cheeky swim). In autumn we can look for a nice soup in a thermos and do not overlook a picnic in winter. A nice red wine all cozy with blankets and good friendship, I can think of nothing better.

6. Respect your surroundings

Never forget the land and space you are occupying and so lucky to occupy, respect the environment. Use reusable or biodegradable items, try using a recycled jam jar as a glass and put those rubbish bags we brought to good use!! Leaving the spot just as beautiful as you found it ensures everyone can continue to enjoy the beauty of nature.
